Why Radon protection is crucial

Since the entry into force of the EURATOM Directive 2013/59 and the German Radiation Protection Act, protection against radon has been an integral part of modern building design. High indoor concentrations can adversely affect the health of occupants. However, legal minimum requirements alone are not enough to create a healthy, balanced indoor environment.

Radon is a naturally occurring noble gas that escapes from the ground and enters buildings through leaky floor slabs or wall joints. Radon occurrence in Europe varies greatly by region and follows the geological structures of the continent. High to very high potential can be found in parts of the Czech Republic, southeastern Germany, and northern Austria. Radon concentrations have also increased in Finland and in metropolitan areas in Sweden and Norway. In contrast, moderate to low levels of radon are found in Spain, Slovenia, and countries to the southeast. In many countries, regions with low and moderate radon levels alternate.
